Our earmarked/envisaged programmes are:
1. Human rights education and sensitisation programme on the New Criminal Procedure Code.
The introduction of and yet to application of the New Criminal Procedure Code in Cameroon is fast gathering momentum. Every body is curious in one way or the other to now about this document, which we members of AHURTOD term “The breakthrough of human rights in Cameroon”. We therefore hold it a challenged to inform and expose the content of the document to the best of our ability to the public to serve as an answer to their several questions.
We have given the wide audience we are going to cover (educate) to include aspects of human rights education. This is because we realise that it will not be complete to talk only about the New Criminal Procedure Code if people do not yet know their rights. We are envisaging 500 groups in Buea Sub Division and later to reach out to Tiko, Limbe, Mutengene and Muyka in the nearest future. The results of groups we targeted have been very encouraging.
2. Promoting women and youth in the democratisation process in the South West Province.
AURTOD is currently participating in the above project with the Pan-African Institute for Development-West Africa (PAID-WA) as the implementing organization alongside other civil society organizations based in the South West Province. The project is geared towards ameliorating the participation of women and youths in the democratisation process in the South West as pilot start and Cameroon in general, in a way that will build their capacity to make informed choices, aspire to governance positions, and effectively support the government in its various development commitments.
Tools currently utilized involve networking and alliance building, sensitisation and advocacy.
Furthermore, given the strong interest and commitment of AHURTOD in the network (Fako Advocates for Democracy) our General Commissioner was appointed to head the coalition. We are therefore co-ordinating the activities of the project and mobilising resources for the start off later this year 2006.
3. HIV/AIDS campaign programme
AHURTOD is mobilising resources to embark in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS, and to create a positive partnership with the Provincial Technical Group for the fights against HIV/AIDS in Buea. Our campaign programmes will be geared towards sensitising people about the existence of HIV/AIDS and the rights of those living with the virus.
4. E-Human Rights/Conflict Analysis programme
Given the importance of education and being an integral part of our activities, we are to start an online training program in human rights and conflict analysis. This programme will last for 10 weeks whenever announced and will involve regular discussion on the Internet, problem solving, case study and a participatory critical analysis of each module. At the end, participant will be awarded a certificate in completion in Human Rights and or Conflict Analysis. Materials to be used will reflect that of experts researching on the subject matter. Our target is limited to 1.000 people from all over the world.
5. Books for change programme
This project, which will commence in September 2006, is aimed at gathering books to set up a library at the Buea Central Prison for use by prison inmates. We have realise that, the centre does not have one and there is much need for one as the inmates themselves through investigation showed interest in having such an indispensable centre within their institution to keep them abreast with the world and up to date with knowledge.
Our expectation is that, the juvenile should greatly benefit from it as the library will contain books, which can help them prepare for public exams while in prison (i.e. First School Living Certificate, GCE O/levels, and GCE A/levels). We therefore appreciate and material need to this project in term of books, and furniture.
We have been fortunate to gain the support of Books for Africa which has promise us a 20ft container. The problem now lies with the payment of US$ 9000 for shipment to Cameroon.
We welcome any donations in form of books in line with this project.
6. Empowering less privilege youths vocationally as poverty reduction tool.
In the month of July-August 2006, AHURTOD will open a vocational training centre to train street children, orphans, and less privilege children in computer skills to permit them gain local secretary jobs around the sub-division which is in high demand. We predict starting with 20 children (trainees) who will be recruited from Tole, Wototo, Small Soppo, Sasse and Longstreet, all rural settlement areas in Buea Sub Division.
Our objective for such a project is to see these children most of whom have seek to deviant and juvenile behaviours as some sought of escape means to readapt into the society responsibly. We welcome donations in computer equipments, and furniture.
7. Formation of Human Rights Clubs in schools
As a means to empower youths to face the present day challenges through human rights education, sensitization and campaign against abuse and torture within their peer community, we would in collaboration with identified schools create human rights schools clubs in Buea, Tiko, Mutengene and Muyuka to instill the interest of human rights advocacy/lobbying and peer sensitization amongst school children (youths).
8. Campaign against violence in schools
Because of repeated violent situations within the Buea community especially in schools, we would begin a campaign against violence in schools, which will include educative talks at school club levels, creation of non-violence picture posters, football match against violence and finally peace building exercise involving teachers and students of identified schools. This project is expected to start in the month of December 2006.
Your humanitarian gesture to facilitate any of these projects would be forever appreciated.
